Our Story
Our story begins back in 1926 when the beginnings of what is now the North West Coastal Highway began with a rough bush track. Since then, the highway and surrounding areas have seen significant change, including the establishment of the Billabong BP.
The North West Coastal Highway bitumen was completed in 1962, with road workers starting in both Geraldton and Carnarvon and meeting in the middle, 2km south of where the Billabong BP is today. In 1962 land was set aside for a roadhouse and motel development following a request by the tourist authorities. The roadhouse was built and operating by December of 1962 and was taken on by John and Joy Kerr in December 1965.
In 1971, a liquor license was granted and the hotel was constructed along with 8 motel units and a swimming pool. The official opening of the pub was on 16th December 1971 with swan beer on tap! As tourism grew, BBQ's were frequently hosted for local station owners, their employees and contractors.
The Billabong's original hotel was flattened by a storm in January of 1980 when the hotel roof blew off and motel rooms damaged as torrential rain poured down. These buildings were eventually restored, only to have the hotel roof blown off again in 1984 by a willy-willy. Misfortune struck again in 1991 when a fire destroyed the entire building in approximately 30 minutes. The greatest loss, besides the beer, was the back wall, which was covered in bank notes from all over the world.
The building was reconstructed in 1993 and we have been fortunate not to experience another disaster since. A recently constructed Telstra tower 1km away ensures mobile service is now readily available – much to our delight. The Billabong has seen many different owners since the originals back in the early sixties. The past owners are; Jim and Jean Cleary, Bernie and Jenny Baldock, Don and Laurie Stone, Ian and Norma Eberle and with the present new owners taking over in early October 2020.
Located halfway between Geraldton and Carnarvon, the Billabong is perfectly situated for a stopover after a long day of driving. With our 24/7 BP fuel, motel & caravan park, restaurant, tavern and café, the Billabong has everything you need and more. We're also accommodating for those who are just passing through and looking to pick up a snack, ice or even take-away liquor. We accept all major credit cards and also have an ATM available.
We take community seriously, that's why we're proud supporters of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Past visitors have also purchased plaques as donations to the service, many of which are on display.
We're open at 6am for breakfast and serve meal until 8pm, 7 days a week.
We look forward to welcoming you to The Billabong!
Best Regards,
The Billabong Team!
